Obituary for Naomi I. "Mickey" Purkis (McKee)
Naomi Imogene (McKee) Purkis of Wrentham, MA, formerly of Millis, MA, died peacefully on Monday February 13th, 2017 after a brief illness.
Mickey as she was known to many of her friends was born on June 21, 1929 in Montoursville, PA, the daughter of the late Galen and Vida (Britton) McKee. Mickey was raised and educated in Naugatuck, CT, and attended Bates College in Lewiston, ME. It was at Bates, where she met the love of her life, John W Purkis. Adhering to her father's wishes that she finish college before getting married, Mickey graduated from Bates in the morning and was married later that afternoon. The happy couple resided in Boston for a year before moving to Millis, MA in 1951 where they raised their five children. Mickey volunteered as a Boy Scout leader, Girl Scout leader, Finance Committee member, and sang in the choir at the Millis Church of Christ. She also worked at Braman's Screw Machine Company, and was in the bowling league. Aside from the love of her family, Mickey enjoyed spending time at her camp Kawartha on Shagg Pond in Woodstock, ME, as well as knitting, quilting and birdwatching with Johnny. After her husband's death in 1987, Mickey travelled extensively with her cousin Eleanore Irish, traveling six continents including a safari trip in Africa and the Trans-Siberian railroad. In more recent years, Mickey always looked forward to having her Thursday breakfast with the girls.
Mickey is survived by her children: John D Purkis and Sanja Krajnovic of Blaine, MN; Arthur H and Christine Purkis of Otisfield, ME; Allen L and Nancy Purkis of Wrentham, MA; Susan M Purkis of Cary, NC; and Gail J and Sean Luck of Mendon, MA.
