Obituary for David Pierce

David Pierce
We are deeply saddened to announce that David Leland Pierce, originally of Hinsdale, MA passed away Thursday March 16th from pneumonia surrounded by his loving family.

His full, well conducted life and his accomplishments are a cause for celebration. Dave was born and raised in Western Massachusetts. He graduated from Pittsfield High, Wesleyan College and the Columbia University’s School of Journalism. He was a veteran of the Korean War and was awarded three Bronze Service Stars and a UN Service Medal. Dave was a writer by vocation. His first job out of graduate school was with the Village Voice in New York City. He went on to work for several newspapers. He adjusted his career to support a growing family by accepting a position in Public Relations and Marketing at Corning Glass. After cofounding Pierce Brown Associates in Rochester, NY the focus of his work gradually shifted to speech writing.

A self-taught trombonist, Dave joined his High School band and never stopped playing. A lifelong lover of jazz he played with Bourbon Street Parade for forty five years stopping only when his health prevented him from going on. He grew up sailing and skiing, childhood hobbies which he taught his children and which became the occasion for many happy days with family. He lived Upstate in the Finger Lakes then Fayetteville, NY where he moved to be near his children and grandchildren.

Dave’s identity as a citizen of the Berkshire Mountains never varied. He made frequent journeys there. Dave valued family, both immediate and extended, above all else. He took great joy in the annual Pierce family reunion where, over time, his voice became an important pillar.

David was an avid volunteer and he supported several charitable organizations.

Dave had an undying, romantic love for Elaine, his surviving wife of 63 years. He is survived also by his daughter Julie Lamie (Jim Lamie), of Millis, his son David Pierce MD (Liz Pierce) of Madison, Wisconsin, and daughter Amy Melton (Jack Melton) of Newburyport, MA. He is also survived by his six grandchildren and two brothers, Dr. Robert Pierce of Rochester and Samuel Pierce JD of Souderton, PA and his Godson David Leland Pierce of Chester, MA. Preceding him in death are his mother Emily Robinson Pierce, his father Carl Pierce, his sister Janet Pierce Brower, and his brothers Wadsworth and Douglas.
