Obituary for Maureen A. Lyons (Byrnes)

Maureen A. Lyons (Byrnes)
Maureen (Byrnes) Lyons passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, September 11 due to complications from a fall. Our “Mom” and “Nana” was a selfless, generous, and giving person, who was a friend to many in her long life.

Maureen was born on September 8, 1934 in Boston, MA to Henry Byrnes and Helena Gaffney in a close knit Irish-Catholic family and was raised in Roslindale, graduating from Roslindale High School. She met her husband the late William “Bill” Lyons through mutual friends, and Bill and she married at Sacred Heart Church in Roslindale in 1958. They had two children, Anne-Marie (Lyons) Grady and Paul Lyons, and they later moved to Medfield, MA, where Maureen lived for 49 years.

Over the course of her life, Maureen worked at John Donnelly and Sons Advertising Company in Boston, WilTel Communications in Marlboro, and one of her most treasured jobs, St. Edward’s Parish in Medfield. In her multiple roles at St. Edward’s Parish, she was a Eucharistic Minister, volunteered to count the collection on Sundays, served as a religious education teacher, and for 15 years was the secretary in the office of Religious Education. She made life-long friends at St. Edward’s and always cherished her time there. She was a devout Catholic who attended daily Mass, who always believed in God’s presence in her life and in the world.

Our Mom and Nana was also a devoted member of the Medfield Senior Center, eagerly taking part in any activity that was offered there. She loved the Medfield Library, a true place of pleasure for her. She was a role model of what it means to be a good friend-sending card after card for people’s birthdays, calling people to check up on them, or just inviting someone to lunch whom she had not seen in a while. She was truly salt-of the-earth and a genuine good soul. We will miss her terribly but know she is with her husband, family and friends watching over us in heaven.

Those wishing may make memorial contributions in Maureen's name to: Medfield Memorial Library 468 Main St, Medfield, MA 02052 or the Covenant House, Times Square Station, PO Box 731, New York, NY 10108.
